Replacing Sony Laptop Keyboard

By Jim • Mar 19th, 2009 • Category: Parts Replacement and Installation

Spilling any kind of sugar containing liquid on a computer or laptop keyboard can render it useless. Replacing the keyboard on a Sony Vaio PCG series laptop is a simple and easy process that shouldn’t take much longer than an hour. Always be sure to turn off the laptop, remove the battery and disconnect the AC adapter before starting any repair. Open the laptop as you would if you were going to be using it. Find the gap between the hinge of the screen and the connection to the screen itself. Take a small flay head screwdriver and pry the connection apart. Repeat this for the other side to allow for the removal of the top cover of the Vaio laptop.

You will not be removing the laptop screen in this process; next insert the screwdriver from the first step above the F7 and F8 keys close to the screen. This will allow you to pop off the cover over the top of the Sony keyboard, be careful when doing so as too much pressure may crack the plastic. Lift the small cover towards you to remove it; it is attached to the assembly by a cable so do not pull it all the way off. Locate a small screw above the F7 and F8 keys under the panel you have just removed and remove it. At this point you will be able to lean the Sony laptop keyboard assembly forward revealing the cable connecting it to the laptop.

The cable does not simply pull off; there are two tabs that need to be pulled up with a screwdriver to release the cable. Remove the old keyboard and then orient the keyboard to the correct position. Place back into the assembly making sure the fit is secure before proceeding with the directions in reverse. If the keys should seem to stick after completing the installation, remove the small panel from the assembly and loosen the screw that keeps the keyboard assembly in place.
