Replacing Inverter – Dell Inspiron 8600

By FrankA • Feb 28th, 2009 • Category: LCD and Inverter Issues

Before starting to remove the inverter from the Dell Inspiron 8600 remove the battery, disconnect the AC adapter, and turn off the power. Open the laptop so that the screen is flat; tilt it all the way over until it reaches 180°. Start on the left side of the laptop and gently pry the top blue portion of the keyboard cover off. It will take a little effort so be careful not to put too much pressure on the plastic cover. As you work down the length of the laptop, you will notice that the cover includes the plastic covering the right hinge of the laptop screen. Be gentle towards the end as there is a plug that must be disconnected to remove this cover.

Around the edge of the screen are rubber covers, remove them to reveal the screws underneath; keep these in a small container so they are not lost. Remove all of the crews to be able to remove the plate off of the screen. Start at the bottom of the screen and gently pull from the inside of the screen in an outward motion and work your way around to the top. You may need to go around several times to be sure the frame is free of the screen assembly. Take this opportunity to spray the area with compressed air to clean out the exposed laptop components.

Directly under the screen you will find the LCD inverter attached to the laptop by a cable and screws. Pull the cable out using the metal portion, not the wire, and then remove the screws at the top of the inverter. Underneath the inverter is a piece of tape that will need to be removed, do so now. Remove the inverter and replace it with the new one. At this point you can connect the AC power and test to see if your screen works. Repeat the process in reverse to complete your project.
